Of course, I might be a little biased because I'm the pastor here. My name is Jim Crockett and I'm originally from Texas. My family and I came to Roanoke in July 2008 after serving congregations in Oklahoma and Georgia. We looked for the friendliest congregation in the country—-and we found it! Let's face it. Every church claims to be friendly. And they are—unless you accidentally step on someone's doctrine or sit on someone's creed. That won't happen here because Disciples have no official doctrine. We never impose any human creed as a test of faith. We rely on the bible as our guide—not as a legal document loaded with religious rules and regulations—but as a beacon of faith that lights our spiritual paths. We encourage open discussion of scripture and sharing of faith stories as a way of discerning God's will for us. We invite all to join us at the Table of the Lord, remembering that Jesus turned away no one. And we feel the good news of Jesus Christ should really be good news. So, whether you're a lifelong Disciple or someone from another tradition seeking a new way, we welcome you with open arms. We hope to meet you soon! _______________________ Opportunities to Be Church * Study—Sunday School, Bible Study, Small Group. * Local Missions—supporters of Roanoke Rescue Mission, Community-In-Action, Presbyterian Community Center and various food and clothing drives. We provide meeting space for several community service groups. * National and Global Missions—supporters of Week of Compassion, and the Disciples Division of Overseas Ministries through Disciples Mission Finance. * Worship—Sunday morning and special services. * Fellowship—monthly Coffee Fellowship, monthly Soup & Salad Luncheon, Friendship Club, annual picnic, special celebrations. * Women’s Groups—Dorcas Group, Lisa C. Established in 1954, Westhampton Christian Church is one of the 3,754 locally owned and self-governed congregations that make up the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a mainline Christian denomination that evolved from the merging of two church reform movements—the Christians and the Disciples of Christ—nearly 200 years ago on the American frontier. Most of the ministers who initiated the reforms had roots in the Church of Scotland. The common vision of our 19th century founders was the restoration of the church to its original New Testament form. They emphasized local church governance, weekly observance of the Lord's Supper, baptism by immersion, and the removal of doctrines and creeds as tests of faith. Today we call ourselves Disciples.
