Feral/Community Cat Lair.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Cause Description:
Our location is Salt Lake City, Utah. The colony consists of feral cats, only some who will tolerate my presence, and semi-friendlies. The ferals typically bolt as soon as they see me, and some don't even come out during the day! The semi-friendlies are mainly the cats who were trapped when they were young, but not young enough to tame, and also cats that were abandoned. These cats have trust issues, but usually come around and let me and a few select others touch them. This usually takes years of bonding, however. I have relocated several ferals from other parts of Utah (and even out of state!) into my colony. These cats usually come from rescue groups, or concerned individuals who are no longer able to take care of them. Here at the Leonard Colony, we have spayed and neutered 70+ cats. We feed about 40-50 cats daily, though that number could be higher due to the fact that not all the cats come out during the day while us mere humans are about. Due to this large amount, we go through a lot of cat food. Our colony eats about 60 pounds of dry food in just one week! Our cats are quite fond of wet food, treats, and catnip. They also enjoy sharing our dinner with us. Some of their favourite meals are seafood, chicken and turkey breasts, grilled steak and shredded beef. One day we'll have a perfectly warm day and the very next we'll have snow four inches thick covering the yard! The weather does a heavy number on many of our beds, shelters, and toys, we have to replace them every couple of years or so. Due to this insane weather here in Utah, we are always in need of beds, shelters, bowls, and toys. Veterinary care can be expensive for just one cat - imagine the costs for a whole colony! Vaccines, microchipping, and emergency care take up the majority of the money we receive in donations, and from our paychecks. The male cats prone to having urinary tract infections (UTIs), we've had a few dog attacks (now we have fence, however, so these should stop *fingers crossed*), and quite a few broken limbs as the cats lose their balance walking across icy surfaces. Between all these possibilities (and many more), our chances of needing emergency care are quite high.
