Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non- profit 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to improving literacy for adults in our county who have low level reading skills. We provide free, individualized, one-on-one ESL and basic literacy instruction for adults. According to various estimates, as many as one in seven – up to 14 percent – of adults in Anne Arundel County read at or below the fifth- grade level. Our trained tutors meet one-on-one with their adult students in local libraries each week, free of charge, offering consistent support and encouragement. They tailor their instruction around the students’ current reading level, interests, and personal goals. This creates a safe learning environment that bolsters students’ self confidence. Their world expands when they can fill out a job application, understand written instructions, read a newspaper, and understand the notes coming home from their children’s teachers.
